A Snapshot of Rex’s Unusual Life

Childhood Dreams

Rex Bushman was born in 1949 in California and grew up in an L.D.S. family in Las Vegas, Nevada, the entertainment capital of the world.

As a child, Rex was fascinated by the sounds of popular music on the radio. He learned to sing Primary songs and joined a boys’ choir where his director encouraged him to play the guitar. He accepted a scholarship to U.N.L.V. in jazz piano, but he longed to rise above the ordinary and become a rock star.

Traveling as a Rock ‘n Roll Musician

His interest in contemporary music expanded to song writing and entertaining. In the colorful 1960s, Rex played with rock 'n roll bands at landmark hotels in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe.

In Vietnam
During the Vietnam War, Rex performed with the USO for American troops throughout Asia. With the band, he experienced the highs and lows of many Asian cultures, but the lifestyle took a toll on his health.

Facing Adversity

After returning to the states, Rex began suffering from delusions, believing he was going to become the fifth member of the Beatles. He was hospitalized and diagnosed with a condition of manic depression, now called bi-polar disorder.

Re-evaluating priorities, Rex left the world of a performing artist, reactivated in church and worked to obtain an education. Although he continued to have significant bouts of mental illness, he earned a degree in accounting and a juris doctorate at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, achieving his goal to become an attorney.

In his two books of life experiences, In the Leafy Treetops and Balancing Act, Rex tells the curious story of coping with mental illness, rising above the failures and learning to succeed at his goals in spite of the disability.

Living a Full Life

Rex is the father of six children. He has a successful law practice as a solo practitioner, providing services in the area of real estate litigation. For several years, he sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and traveled extensively, sharing his talents in countries around the globe.

Rex continues to pursue his various musical interests. He has recorded three albums of children’s Primary songs and two CDs of original country music as an independent artist in Nashville, Tennessee.

He is currently writing and publishing original, inspirational music. His books and music are available for sale through this website.
